Doctor Luong Thi Anh Thu, from the High-Tech Eye Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, discovered numerous parasites and their eggs clinging to the girl's eyelashes. Microscopic examination confirmed the presence of pubic lice, typically found in genital, armpit, chest, beard, or even eyelash hair.
Pubic lice spread through close contact, primarily sexual. "Children can become infected by sharing beds, towels, or bedding with infested individuals, even if those individuals show no obvious symptoms," Dr. Thu explained.
Infants and young children, with their underdeveloped immune systems and delicate eyelid skin, are particularly vulnerable to eyelid inflammation, persistent itching, eyelash loss, and surrounding skin damage from lice. The nocturnal activity of the lice often disrupts sleep, leading to increased fussiness and constant eye rubbing.
Dr. Thu advises parents to seek immediate medical attention if their child exhibits any unusual eye symptoms. Early detection and prompt treatment can prevent complications and limit the spread of infestation.
