On 9/2, Gia Lai provincial police identified three teenagers involved in the assault on Nguyen. Two of them are students at Truong Trung Vuong Junior High School and Nguyen Du Junior High School in Dien Hong ward, while the third resides in Bien Ho commune.

The group stated that the reason for the mob assault on the victim was "jealousy."

In the early morning of 7/2, Nguyen was drinking with two friends, including a female student, on Pham Van Dong street, Pleiku ward. Shortly after, a group of teenagers arrived on motorbikes and proceeded to punch and kick Nguyen, causing him to lose consciousness. The friend sitting with the victim was also repeatedly attacked by the group.

Nguyen was rushed to Hoang Anh Gia Lai University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital for emergency treatment and later transferred to Gia Lai Provincial Pediatric Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries the following evening.

The female student drinking with Nguyen was reportedly the "girlfriend" of one of the suspects in the group.
