Around 8 p.m. on 22/7, Thanh, a resident of Phu Tho, rode a motorbike to a jewelry store in Hoa Thuan 2 Hamlet, Can Giuoc Commune, owned by 51-year-old Nguyen Thanh Hai. Thanh was carrying a hammer and a black handgun (classified as a support tool).
Upon entering, Thanh brandished the gun at Hai and used the hammer to shatter the display case, grabbing numerous pieces of jewelry. He stuffed the items into a plastic bag and fled toward Ho Chi Minh City.
The store owner shouted for help, and nearby residents joined the chase. After about one kilometer, they managed to cut Thanh off and apprehend him.
