Drowsy trucker's illegal stop on expressway causes fatal crash

Le Xuan Hung, a container truck driver, admitted to stopping on the Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway due to drowsiness without placing warning devices, resulting in a collision with a passenger bus that killed 2 people.

On 6/7, 44-year-old Hung was detained by Da Nang City Police for three months for "Violation of Road Traffic Regulations."

Hung was the truck driver involved in the serious accident that occurred in the early morning of 19/6 on the Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway (section through Thang Phu commune, Da Nang City). The crash resulted in the deaths of the bus driver and assistant, and injured several others.

Senior Colonel Nguyen Ha Lai, Deputy Director of Da Nang City Police, stated that Hung admitted to stopping his vehicle on the expressway due to drowsiness. The truck was positioned with half of it in the emergency lane and the other half in the middle lane. Hung only turned on the rear signal lights of the trailer and did not place warning devices as required.

Around 2:30 a.m. on 19/6, a passenger bus carrying more than 20 people crashed into the back of the container truck. The bus driver and assistant died at the scene. The front of the bus was severely damaged, and several passengers were injured and trapped.

Police dispatched two vehicles and eight officers to the scene. They used specialized equipment to cut open the bus frame and free the trapped passengers. Sixteen people were hospitalized, including two with serious injuries (one with a broken femur), while the rest suffered minor injuries.

Tests revealed that Hung had no alcohol or drugs in his system, and his FC class driver's license was valid.
