On 31/7, Son and his wife, Nguyen Thi Chang, 51, were arrested by An Giang Provincial Police for fraud and misappropriation of property.
This action is part of a broader investigation into land fraud at Phu Quoc Airport, which has already led to the arrests of five individuals, including Son's 70-year-old father, Nguyen Van Dien.

The investigation revealed that between 2008 and 2010, Dien, along with Nguyen Quoc Dien, Diep Duy Hao, Diep Duy Dung, and Diep Khanh Quang (aged 25 to 49), who owned land within the Phu Quoc airport project that had been compensated and cleared, illegally occupied another 5 hectares within the same project. They then fraudulently sold this land to 14 people, misappropriating 5 billion VND. Seeing this, Son and his wife also illegally occupied two plots totaling 5.7 hectares, falsely claiming it as reclaimed land, and sold them to two individuals for 6.6 billion VND.
Despite repeated forced evictions and the land's official handover to Airports Corporation of Vietnam for management and operation, Dien's group and Son's family continued to reoccupy the land until they successfully carried out their fraudulent activities.
An Giang Provincial Police are expanding their investigation, clarifying the actions of several related individuals, and urging others involved to surrender to receive leniency.
