Phong confessed to losing over 300 million VND gambling online, which led him to plan the robbery in hopes of recouping his losses. Around 10 AM on 6/7, he set out on a motorbike, wearing a long-sleeved sun-protective shirt, a face mask, and carrying a knife.
He rode around the Nui Truc - Kim Ma - Giang Vo area before targeting a gold shop on Nui Truc street where he saw a lone female owner inside. Phong threatened her with the knife and stole three gold bracelets and six gold necklaces.
