Inmate escapes Dong Thap camp, recaptured

Huynh Van Doi, 42, was arrested after three days on the run from a detention camp, having left his hiding spot in a livestock area due to hunger and mosquito bites to search for food.

On the morning of 13/1, leaders of Phuoc Hoa Detention Camp, under the Department of Prison Management, Compulsory Education Facilities, and Reformatories (Ministry of Public Security), announced that police had apprehended Doi in the camp's livestock and production area. Doi, a native of Long Hung commune, Dong Thap, was found three days after his escape.

Doi had escaped on the afternoon of three days ago, taking advantage of a security lapse while working at sub-camp K2. Following his disappearance, dozens of police officers and K9 units were mobilized to conduct an intensive search for the inmate. An arrest warrant was also issued by the investigation agency.

After fleeing the labor area, Doi initially concealed himself within the camp's livestock zone, which allowed him to evade immediate detection. However, on the morning of his capture, driven by hunger and discomfort from mosquito bites, he ventured out to find food, leading to his discovery and arrest.

Last September, Doi was sentenced to one year in prison for property theft by the People's Court of District 10, TP HCM. He was transferred to Phuoc Hoa Detention Camp, located in Tan Phuoc 2 commune, on 24/12/2025. Prison leaders stated that Doi had escaped with only about three months remaining on his sentence.
