Locked child in room then set fire

Ho Xuan Nhan, 39, using drugs, locked his child in a bedroom and set it ablaze "to die together," but the child was fortunately rescued.

On 4/3, the People's Procuracy of Dak Lak province approved the decision to prosecute Nhan, residing in Tuy An Bac commune, for murder, under Article 123 of the Penal Code.

According to the case file, the incident occurred around 8:30 on 30/11/2025. After using drugs, Nhan believed his mother was hiding that his wife (who had previously left home) had returned to visit and buy things for their child. This led him to curse, threaten to burn down the house, and "harm" family members.

Nhan took clothes received as flood relief, threw them onto the living room floor, poured kerosene on them, and threatened to light them. Frightened, his parents and one child fled outside. Nhan then took the remaining child into a bedroom, closed the door, and locked it from the inside. He subsequently piled flammable items against the door and set the room on fire.

As the fire erupted, relatives and neighbors tried to extinguish it, but Nhan threatened them with a knife. Fortunately, the child was brought out safely.

Nhan was arrested by the Dak Lak Provincial Police on 9/12/2025 and initially prosecuted for threatening to kill. However, the investigation determined Nhan had previously harbored suicidal thoughts and intended to harm his child, stating that "the child's survival was contrary to the suspect's wishes." Consequently, investigators changed the charge to murder.
