Thien confessed that he needed money and planned to rob the gold store. On 3/9, he rode his motorbike to Tay Ninh province and targeted a seemingly empty jewelry store in Long Hau hamlet, Can Giuoc commune. He pretended to be a customer interested in buying gold.
A staff member showed him three gold bracelets weighing over 11.8 chi (a Vietnamese unit of weight, equivalent to 3.75 grams), worth almost 90 million VND. When the employee wasn't looking, Thien grabbed the bracelets and fled towards Ho Chi Minh City.
