Man sentenced for shooting brother in inheritance dispute

A man in An Giang province has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for shooting his younger brother during an argument over inheritance.

Phan The Hung, 29, received a 12-year prison sentence on 1/8 from the An Giang Provincial People's Court for attempted murder and illegal possession and use of a military weapon.

Hung had prior convictions for intentional injury and property damage.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of 24/2 following a drinking session at Hung's home with his younger brother, Phan Huy Hoang, and two others. An argument erupted between the brothers over the division of family assets, escalating into a physical altercation.

Hung retrieved a pellet gun, purchased online for 3.5 million VND, and fired at Hoang, who was lying in a hammock. The shot missed, and a struggle ensued. As Hoang fled, Hung shot him in the back.

Hoang sought refuge in a relative's house and was later taken to the hospital. A medical examination determined his injuries amounted to 5%.

Hung turned himself in to the police. Investigators concluded that Hung intended to kill his brother but failed due to Hoang's escape and prompt medical attention. The gun and pellets were confirmed to be military-grade weapons.
