Notorious Hanoi gangster Hanh 'Su' arrested

Nguyen Thi Hanh, 67, known as Hanh "Su", a former associate of the infamous gangster Nam Cam, was arrested for allegedly extorting money after a failed property deal.

Hanoi police arrested Hanh "Su" and four accomplices on 5/7 on charges of extortion, according to the city's Criminal Investigation Department.

Hanh "Su" is a known figure in the criminal underworld with a history of convictions. She is a prominent gangster in Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Ho Chi Minh City, and was once an associate of the notorious gangster Nam Cam.

The case stems from a 32 billion VND down payment Hanh made in May 2019 to a couple for a property in O Cho Dua ward. The property was already mortgaged to a bank since 2011.

The property transfer never happened. Hanh repeatedly demanded a refund from the couple. In early June, she visited the husband at his company, demanding an initial 20 billion VND payment, but was refused.

From the evening of 1/7 to the morning of 3/7, Hanh, along with Tran Ngoc Tung, 54, Tran Anh Trang, Tran Anh Thu (Tung's daughter), and Do Hai Long (Thu's son), occupied the husband's company office, eating and sleeping there. Their aim was to prevent him from leaving and pressure him into returning the money.
