The mysterious figure in the case of the young woman who 'suddenly vanished'

After Jennifer Kesse disappeared from her apartment, a suspicious person was captured on surveillance footage abandoning her car at a nearby complex, but a gate obscured their face.

24-year-old Jennifer Kesse lived alone in an apartment in Orlando, Florida. She was a successful young woman with a stable job as a finance manager at a central Florida investment company. Kesse and her boyfriend, Rob Allen, had just returned from a vacation in the US Virgin Islands.

Her life seemed perfect until the fateful morning of 24/1/2006.

A baffling disappearance

On the evening of 23/1/2006, Kesse returned from work at 6 pm and spoke with her family on the phone. She called her boyfriend at 10 pm before going to bed. Allen was the last person to speak with her.

Kesse usually called or texted Allen each morning as she prepared for work, but no message arrived on the 24th. Worried, Allen tried repeatedly to contact her, but received no answer; the calls went straight to voicemail.

Colleagues also wondered why they hadn't heard from Kesse when she missed an important morning meeting.

At 11 am, the company contacted Kesse's parents to inform them of the situation. Sensing something was wrong, the Kesses drove to their daughter's apartment to check on her.

They quickly discovered Kesse's car was missing, but the apartment showed no signs of disturbance. They found a damp towel, suggesting she had showered that morning before leaving for work, some clothes laid out on the bed, pajamas on the floor, and some makeup on the counter. Kesse's favorite high heels were also gone. All the evidence pointed to her having left for work as usual.

So, where was Jennifer Kesse?

Scant clues in the car

The Kesses immediately called the Orlando Police Department to report Jennifer missing. "They looked around the apartment, shrugged their shoulders and said, 'She probably had a fight with her boyfriend, she’ll be back,' and left," Kesse's father recounted.

On the evening of the 24th, family and friends began distributing flyers, hoping for information about Kesse's whereabouts. By the next day, news of her disappearance had spread nationwide.

Two days after Kesse vanished, police received a call from someone who had seen a picture of her black 2004 Chevy Malibu on the news. The caller thought it resembled a car parked outside their apartment complex, about a mile from Kesse's home. It was indeed Kesse's car.

Analysis of the car at the crime lab yielded only two pieces of evidence: a small amount of DNA and a trace that was "too small" to provide any useful information. This information was revealed by Kesse's father to Fox News in 2016.

A DVD player was still in the backseat. Personal belongings like her cell phone and purse were missing, but there had been no activity on Kesse's bank accounts since her disappearance, so police didn't believe robbery was the motive.

The mystery person obscured by the gate

Surveillance footage from the complex where the car was found proved equally frustrating for investigators.

The video showed the car being parked around noon on the day Kesse disappeared. A person sat in the car for 32 seconds, then got out and walked away. However, nearly every identifying feature of the suspicious individual was completely obscured by the complex's iron gate. The camera was designed to capture images every three seconds, rather than continuously, so every three seconds, the suspect's face was blocked by a different gate post.

Surveillance video captured the suspicious person abandoning Jennifer Kesse’s car at the apartment complex.

Investigators enlisted the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to enhance the video, but they couldn't even determine the suspect's gender. They could only discern that the person was between 5'5" and 5'9" tall and was wearing white clothing.

Media reports on the case described the obscured video as making this person the "luckiest suspect ever".

With few leads to pursue, police turned their attention to those who knew Kesse. Her brother, boyfriend, and even an ex-boyfriend seeking to rekindle their relationship were investigated, then cleared. Police learned of a co-worker who had unsuccessfully pursued Kesse, but he was also cleared.

Kesse had told her family that construction workers renovating the complex would occasionally whistle at her, but those leads went nowhere. Kesse's credit cards weren't used after her disappearance, and her cell phone was turned off. The police had no further trails to follow.

The Kesse family's struggle

Before vanishing without a trace, Kesse seemed to have it all: a loving family, a boyfriend, a great job, and no reason to leave it all behind. Her family believes something terrible happened to her.

"Imagine waking up and your daughter's not there. You can't reach her, you can't locate her. Law enforcement can't either. Hours go by in a panic and days go by in the worst nightmare. I can't imagine what the Kesse family has gone through for the last 10 years," said Orlando Police Detective Teresa Sprague in 2016, on the 10th anniversary of Kesse's disappearance.

In 2018, the Kesse family sued the Orlando Police Department to obtain more information about Jennifer's disappearance. They said the department initially claimed there was "no evidence whatsoever, or nothing of evidentiary value in or on Jennifer's vehicle." However, after suing and obtaining records from the city, the family sifted through approximately 16,000 pages of documents, only then learning that police had collected DNA from the car.

The family also discovered police photos of Kesse's car they had never seen before. The photos showed construction dust and “signs of a struggle” on the hood.

In 2020, Kesse's father suggested his daughter may have been a victim of human trafficking. In 2022, he accused the Orlando Police Department of negligence and incompetence in their investigation. According to him, while the family fought for investigative records and tirelessly hired private investigators to search for Jennifer, the police let the case sit dormant since 2010.

In 11/2022, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) took over the investigation, but every lead went cold.

This past June, the Kesse family received a call from the FDLE informing them that investigators had collected new DNA evidence and had narrowed down suspects using a list compiled by the Kesse family themselves.

According to Kesse's father, the FDLE no longer considers the case cold and believes they are making progress, thanks to new technology that is helping eliminate previous roadblocks related to the evidence.

The family is now hoping for any new information that might reveal what happened to Jennifer. "I want to know where Jennifer is, dead or alive," Mr. Kesse said.
