Thousands defrauded through Facebook charity scams

Nguyen Hong Han and accomplices used multiple Facebook accounts soliciting support for hardship cases, misappropriating over 3,502 transactions from benevolent donors.

On 24/6, Han, 26, was sentenced by the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Court to 15 years and 6 months in prison for fraud and having sexual intercourse with a minor aged 13 to under 16.

Le Huyen Tran, 21, (Han's common-law wife) received a sentence of 7 years and 6 months. Huynh Thanh Toan, 28, was sentenced to 12 years, and Nguyen Khanh Duy, 30, received a 6-month sentence, all for fraud.

According to the indictment, Han and Tran (then under 16) began living together as a couple in May 2019 and have a child together.

Exploiting public generosity, Han purchased multiple unregistered SIM cards to create Facebook accounts for soliciting charitable donations. He downloaded images of individuals in pitiful circumstances and posted them on Facebook to appeal for financial support.

Han used his accomplices' bank accounts to receive the funds, which he spent on personal expenses, including gold, phones, and motorcycles. He also instructed Toan and Duy on how to replicate his scheme.

In December 2023, a Bac Lieu City resident reported the scam to authorities after donating money to Han.

Investigators determined that from June 2020 until their arrest, the defendants received over 2 billion VND from 1,467 accounts through 3,502 transactions.

During the investigation and trial, the defendants confessed and voluntarily compensated a portion of the defrauded amount.
