Two women sentenced for selling 14-year-old girl into marriage in China

Cut Thi Tuyet and Cut Thi Lien received 10- and 12-year prison sentences for trafficking a 14-year-old girl to China for marriage, receiving 250 million VND.

On 30/6, the People’s Court of Nghe An province sentenced Tuyet, 36, and Lien, 33, for child trafficking.

The court also ordered the two defendants to compensate the victim 23 million VND for emotional distress.

In 2016, Tuyet and Lien approached a family living in the Nghe An border region, persuading them to let their 14-year-old daughter go to China to work. They promised the girl a prosperous life and her parents 100 million VND, assuring them their daughter would return after three years.

Needing money to build a house, the family agreed. Tuyet and Lien took the victim by bus to the northern border, then across the border into China, where they sold her to a local man for 250 million VND as his wife.

After the transaction, Tuyet and Lien gave the girl’s family 100 million VND, keeping the rest for themselves.

In June 2024, the victim escaped back to Vietnam and reported Tuyet and Lien’s crime. Knowing they had been exposed, the two suspects turned themselves in.
