Las Vegas police successfully used a drone to track and apprehend a suspect involved in a violent knife attack following a vehicle crash into a store. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 on 23/3, saw a suspect drive an oto through the front doors of a Dollar Tree store before assaulting a woman with a knife.
Investigators believe the attack stemmed from a family dispute. During the assault, another individual at the scene fired a weapon at the suspect, causing him to flee before police arrived. The woman was transported to a hospital; her condition has not been disclosed. The individual who fired the weapon has been detained for investigation.
The Las Vegas Police Department (LVPD) recently released video footage showcasing the drone unit's pivotal role. The footage shows the LVPD’s drone unit tracking the suspect from above as he attempted to evade capture, running through the area and weaving between buildings and parked cars while ground officers approached from multiple directions.
Thanks to the drone's aerial observation, police quickly pinpointed the suspect's hiding spot behind trash cans near a shopping center. Upon receiving this real-time information, patrol officers, accompanied by K9 units, immediately moved in and apprehended the suspect without incident.
The released video received widespread praise online, with many commenters lauding the drone technology as "amazing" and emphasizing its effectiveness in tracking dangerous suspects. Officials stated that police are increasingly relying on drone technology to respond to rapidly evolving violent situations and to make arrests more effectively.
"This is another example of how our drone program is helping officers respond faster, track suspects more effectively, and protect lives in critical moments," police said in a statement accompanying the video.
