Using a fake Facebook account to defraud with discounted phones

Nguyen Quang Dai created a fake Facebook account and staged transactions to defraud acquaintances, exploiting internal discount information from a phone manufacturer.

On 10/1, the Da Nang City Police Criminal Investigation Department announced the initiation of legal proceedings and the temporary detention of Nguyen Quang Dai, 23, residing in Ngu Hanh Son ward, to investigate the fraudulent appropriation of property.

The arrest followed a report on 7/1 from a young man in Ban Thach ward, Da Nang. The victim claimed Dai defrauded him of over 96 million VND by promising discounted mobile phones.

Authorities determined that Dai, despite no longer working at an electronics store and lacking access to promotional programs, falsely claimed he could purchase OPPO Find X9 phones with a 30-40% discount off the market price. He convinced the victim to pool money to buy five phones for resale.

To build trust, Dai created a fake Facebook account under the name "My Linh". He staged conversations about buying phones, discussing selling prices and discount rates, then sent screenshots to the victim. Believing Dai, the victim transferred 96,8 million VND in total over several transactions.

After receiving the money, Dai did not purchase the phones. Instead, he used the entire amount to pay debts and for personal expenses.

During the expanded investigation, police also discovered that in late 12/2025, Dai used the "My Linh" Facebook account again to defraud others of valuable phone subscriptions. He was arrested while attempting to sell or pawn these items.

Working with the police, Dai confessed to the criminal act.
