Expert reveals how to keep a home cockroach-free for 20 years

Instead of using sprays, an entomology professor advises using gel bait and immediately discarding shipping cartons to prevent cockroach infestations.

Professor Huang Shaoyi from the Department of Entomology at Chung Hsing University, Taiwan, states that his family has not seen a single cockroach or ant in nearly 20 years. His secret lies in three principles: eliminating food sources, blocking entry points, and applying bait correctly.

When cockroaches appear indoors, Professor Huang advises against overusing sprays, as they offer only temporary relief. A more comprehensive solution is to use gel cockroach bait.

This type of bait works by creating a "chain death" effect. Cockroaches that consume the gel bait, typically placed in dark corners or cracks, do not die instantly. Instead, they carry the poison back to their nest. When an infected cockroach dies, others, known to feed on dead insects, become poisoned. This ultimately eradicates the entire nest.

Recently, images of a Taiwan apartment overrun with cockroaches in door crevices and on walls went viral on social media, garnering millions of views. Experts determined that, in addition to hygiene issues, a common but often overlooked source of cockroach spread is online shopping packages.

According to pest control expert Zheng Guokeng, cockroaches, particularly those carrying eggs, prefer to hide and lay eggs within the corrugated layers of cardboard boxes. One cockroach egg sac can hatch approximately 30 nymphs. Therefore, residents should open and inspect packages outside their living spaces and immediately discard empty boxes.

To maintain a long-term insect-free living environment, Taiwan's environmental agency and experts offer core advice:

Eliminate food sources: Thoroughly clean kitchen areas, leaving no food crumbs or trash overnight. Wipe grease from kitchen walls, as this also serves as cockroach food.

Block entry points: Close windows near light wells, drains, or damp areas after 18h to prevent insects from crawling in from outside. Seal cracks in walls and install insect screens on drain covers.

Place bait correctly: Cockroach bait should be placed in dark, warm spots like under refrigerators or behind wooden cabinets. Avoid windy areas that might dissipate the attractant scent, or places easily accessible to children and pets.
