Girl who received liver transplant to marry brother of donor

Brooklyn Dotson, 24, who received a liver transplant as an infant, is set to marry the brother of her organ donor.

Brooklyn Dotson's life began with a dire diagnosis. In 2003, at just a few months old, Brooklyn Dotson from Kentucky was diagnosed with a rare liver disease. Doctors predicted she had only three days to live and advised her family to prepare for the worst.

Her mother's determination, however, led to a life-saving opportunity. Dotson's mother was determined to find a liver donor to save her daughter. Soon after, a suitable liver was found, allowing Dotson to survive.

The donor was Michael Waters, a 10-year-old boy whose tragic death brought new life to many. Michael Waters, a 10-year-old from Dayton, Ohio, died in a car accident. His parents honored his wish to be an organ donor. Many of Michael's organs, including his heart, corneas, lungs, kidneys, and liver, were donated to various patients. Dotson received his liver at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

The successful surgery enabled Dotson to overcome her illness. The transplant allowed her to grow up normally.

US medical regulations initially kept donor and recipient identities confidential. A few years after the transplant, Dotson's mother sent a thank-you letter to the Waters family via the organ donation coordination organization. Once both families agreed to disclose their identities, the hospital arranged a meeting.

This initial connection blossomed into a deep bond between the two families. The families stayed in touch and grew close. Dotson became friends with Noah Waters, Michael's older brother. They celebrated birthdays, holidays, and life milestones together. "Our lives have been connected since that moment", Dotson and Noah wrote on their wedding website.

Their friendship deepened, leading to romantic feelings. "Sometimes we video-called 8 hours a day", Dotson recalled. She realized her feelings for Noah after her birthday. Her mother messaged Noah, suggesting her daughter liked him, and he visited that same weekend.

The couple dated, got engaged, and are now planning their wedding. They are set to marry on 26/9 in Monticello, Kentucky, at a venue overlooking Lake Cumberland. "I had no idea my younger brother would save my wife's life 20 years later", Noah stated.

Family members see a deeper meaning in their union. Beth Poteet, Noah's cousin, believes their meeting is part of Michael's story. "Looking back now, I think God always had a plan, and that plan was for them to be together, to continue the family's legacy through Michael", Poteet commented.

Dotson will honor Michael's memory by taking the Waters surname. After the wedding, Dotson will change her surname to Waters, the same as the boy who donated his liver to save her. "Because of Michael, I am alive. I hope to cherish his memories in the best way possible", she said.
