In 2021, after a failed fish farming business, Li, from Shandong province, found himself in a crisis, struggling financially.
He stumbled upon *One-Punch Man*, a popular Japanese manga series about Saitama, a bald, impoverished superhero living in a rundown apartment who follows a rigorous training routine: 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10 km run every day.
After three years, he becomes strong enough to defeat any monster with a single punch.
"I had to save myself. I couldn't go on living like that," Li said, and he embarked on his journey on 24/8/2021. His biggest challenge was financial. He ran in shoes costing less than 10 CNY and lived on eggs and instant noodles.
Li documented his training, sharing it on social media, and quickly gained over one million followers.

Supporters sent him running shoes and supplements; a group in Taiwan even live-streamed his runs on a school screen. During a marathon, Li met his girlfriend, who became his companion and encouraged him throughout his journey.
On July 19th, Li completed his 1,000-day challenge, having run over 20,000 km and performed over one million push-ups, sit-ups, and squats. His once frail body became toned and healthy; his spirit also shifted to optimism and confidence.
"I try to amplify boundless hope," he said.
To mark the milestone, Li shaved his head and dressed up as Saitama as a tribute to the character who inspired him. The author of *One-Punch Man* even learned of his feat and sent congratulations: "Your willpower is incredible!"
Li said the 1,000-day challenge is just the beginning. His next goal is to set a Guinness World Record by running 365 marathons (42 km) in a year.
