Yamal draws attention for prayer amid senior players' scuffle

As Argentina's Leandro Paredes clashed with Gavi after the final whistle of the World Cup final, Lamine Yamal quietly clasped his hands in prayer.

The final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey concluded with Spain's 1-0 victory, securing their second World Cup title.

Immediately after the final whistle, tensions flared on the field. As Spanish players began celebrating, midfielder Leandro Paredes engaged in an argument and scuffle with Gavi, prompting referee Slavko Vincic to intervene.

Amidst the chaos, television cameras captured a contrasting image of Lamine Yamal. The 19-year-old forward knelt, hands outstretched in prayer, seemingly oblivious to the events unfolding around him.

The video quickly went viral across social media platforms. Most fans praised the young star's composure and maturity.

Yamal, born into a Muslim family, often performs sujoud – the Islamic prostration prayer ritual – by kneeling before important matches or after scoring goals.

During Ramadan, Barcelona Football Club designed a specific nutrition and training regimen for Yamal to maintain his health.

Yamal also frequently uses his well-known "304" celebration, a tribute to the working-class neighborhood in Spain's Catalan region where he grew up. His hometown, Mataro, has the postal code 08304. Yamal forms the number 0 with his crossed hands in the middle, 3 on his left hand, and 4 on his right.

During the final, another emotional moment occurred when Lamine Yamal approached Argentina captain Lionel Messi for a hug before joining his teammates for the trophy ceremony.

This video quickly circulated on social media, garnering millions of views. Fox Sports remarked, "Greatness comes full circle", while many fans dubbed it "the most beautiful moment after the final".

Yamal began his international career by winning Euro 2024, subsequently adding the World Cup 2026 to his growing trophy collection. This victory also marked Spain's first World Cup triumph since 2010.

Yamal narrowly missed the Best Young Player award, which went to teammate Pau Cubarsi, while the World Cup Golden Ball was awarded to Rodri. Nevertheless, the 19-year-old forward has many opportunities to achieve further individual and team honors in the future.
