Andreeva reaches first grand slam final

Nineteen-year-old Mirra Andreeva defeated 15th seed Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3 in the Roland Garros semifinals on 4/6.

The victory not only ended Kostyuk's 17-match winning streak on clay but also allowed Andreeva to avenge two previous losses to the Ukrainian player in 2026.

Despite entering the semifinal with high form after championships in Rouen and Madrid, Kostyuk did not display her usual performance this clay season. The Ukrainian player achieved only a 51% first-serve success rate, meaning nearly half of her service points began with a second serve. She won just 34% of points on her second serve and committed four double faults.

These statistics highlighted Kostyuk's struggles against her teenage opponent. In eight service games, she held only three and was broken five times.

Kostyuk committed 34 unforced errors while hitting only 15 winners. Andreeva, in contrast, played consistently and effectively, recording 14 winners and 22 unforced errors. The Russian player controlled the match without playing aggressively, holding seven of eight service games.

Three years after her impactful Roland Garros semifinal debut at age 17, Andreeva is now poised for her first career Grand Slam title.

This result also boosts Andreeva's 2026 season record to 35 wins and three losses, surpassing any other female player on Tour. She will rise to seventh in the world after Roland Garros, while Kostyuk is expected to rank 12th on the updated WTA rankings.

Andreeva will meet Maja Chwalinska in the final on 6/6. Chwalinska defeated 25th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6(4), 6-4 in 2 hours and 10 minutes, becoming the first qualifier in tournament history to reach the final. She is also the third female player to reach the Roland Garros final in her main draw debut, following Evonne Goolagong (1971) and Chris Evert (1973).

Chwalinska arrived in Paris with a career-high ranking of world 113 and is now close to entering the top 20 for the first time. The 24-year-old Polish player has won nine consecutive matches at Roland Garros 2026, including three qualifying matches and six main draw matches.

The final between Andreeva and Chwalinska promises an intense battle of wits between two of the most versatile and flexible players at Roland Garros. The showdown will take place at 8 PM on Saturday, 6/6 (Hanoi time).
