The 2-3 result on 25/1 marked Arsenal's first home defeat at Emirates Stadium across all competitions this season. It was also the first time the Gunners conceded three goals in a Premier League match since their 4-3 victory over Luton Town in 12/2023, ending a run of 83 matches without conceding more than two goals. This significant loss has sparked concerns among football pundits and former players.
On Sky Sports, legend Patrick Vieira openly questioned Arsenal's mental strength. "They are still leading, but doubts about their character are justified. It's not just about losing, but how they lost", he commented. The former French international felt that attacking players like Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard did not create enough threat. He also observed a lack of a true leader to lift the team's spirits, criticizing his former club for playing too cautiously and lacking creativity.
Vieira emphasized the need for Arsenal to return to fundamentals. "They need to get back to basics, dare to express themselves, play with freedom and look forward", he stated. "Too many players were out of form today. This should have been a must-win game. Arsenal needed to send a message to the rest of the league, but they failed to do so".

Former coach Arsene Wenger also identified "cracks" in his old team's play. "When you concede three goals at home, it's very difficult to win", he noted, suggesting that the way both teams scored partly reflected differences in their playing styles. Wenger analyzed that Manchester United deployed an organized, cohesive, and balanced playing style. In contrast, Arsenal's goals came more from individual strength and set pieces, such as Merino's second goal. "The opening goal was also not a deliberate combination play. Arsenal tried their best, but lacked patience and technical cohesion, which was evident in the first half", he added.
Meanwhile, Roy Keane suggested Arsenal were showing fear in the face of the challenge. "The pressure is weighing heavily on them", the former Irish midfielder emphasized. He pointed out that this is not the first time Arsenal have squandered an advantage from a favorable position, urging them to "get back to basics and embrace this race, instead of being deterred by pressure".
In response to these criticisms, coach Mikel Arteta stated that he respects all opinions. He admitted Arsenal needs to show stronger character if they want to achieve their goals this season. "We accept all opinions. Ultimately, the important thing is to demonstrate mental strength on the field", he said. However, the Spanish tactician also suggested the main reason for the loss was not entirely psychological. "I am not sure it was a mental issue, but rather that we did not play well, especially technically. Against an opponent like Manchester United, even one mistake will be punished", he analyzed.
Arsenal have not won their three most recent Premier League matches, drawing 0-0 with Liverpool, 0-0 with Nottingham Forest, and then losing to Manchester United. From having the chance to open a 9-point lead, the Gunners are now only four points ahead of Manchester City and face increased pressure in the title race. In the next round on 30/1, Arteta's team will travel to face Leeds, the club currently in 16th place.
