Max Dowman recently emerged as a hero for Arsenal. The midfielder, born in 2009, came off the bench in the 30th round premier league match against Everton on 14/3. He initiated the attack that led to the opening goal in the 89th minute, then dribbled past defenders to seal a 2-0 victory eight minutes later. This exceptional goal against Everton made Dowman the youngest scorer in the premier league at just 16 years and 73 days old. The previous record, set by James Vaughan in 2005, was at 16 years and 271 days.
Arsenal has seven premier league matches remaining, including four in May, along with opportunities in the FA Cup, League Cup, and Champions League. However, Dowman faces his General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams, a crucial qualification for 16-year-olds in England that determines further education and career paths. These exams typically take place in May and June. If he focuses on his studies and exams, the Arsenal prodigy might miss most of the upcoming key matches.

Speaking on YouTube on 16/3, Wayne Rooney, a former Man Utd legend, predicted: "Dowman could become a premier league champion while still in high school." Rooney added: "But if his studies are the priority, he won't play much in the coming weeks. He has to pass his GCSE exams. I'm sure, alongside football, education is very important to him and his family. He won't play as much as he'd like, but he has many years ahead."
Dowman has only played seven matches across all competitions for Arsenal. On 4/11/2025, at just 15 years and 308 days old, the English prodigy set a record as the youngest player to feature in the Champions League.
According to Rooney, who also rose to prominence at a young age, Dowman exudes charisma, confidence, ball retention skills, the ability to attract opposing defenders, and breakthrough potential. The former Man Utd legend also advised Arsenal not to be overly cautious in developing this talent. Rooney stated: "Coach Mikel Arteta and some veteran players at Arsenal won't let him get complacent. But in my opinion, let him enjoy and express himself. We have a new 16-year-old player with great potential. Hopefully, he can fully develop that potential."
Many other experts have also praised Dowman. John Terry, former captain of Chelsea and the England national team, compared the Arsenal prodigy to Lionel Messi, the superstar renowned for his dribbling ability and eight Ballons d'Or.
