Arteta: 'Arsenal's squad is more reliable now'

Head coach Mikel Arteta is confident Arsenal has learned from previous seasons in building a squad with enough depth to overcome a personnel crisis.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is confident in his team's ability to navigate a current injury crisis, citing lessons learned from previous seasons and significant squad investment. The Gunners face a personnel challenge ahead of their Premier League round 14 match against Brentford, with key players sidelined.

Kai Havertz, who has been out since August, was initially expected to return early this month. However, Arteta confirmed the German forward will be sidelined for a few more weeks as his recovery has not progressed as hoped. To compensate, Arteta is considering deploying Mikel Merino, who scored against Chelsea last weekend, as a central striker. Alternatively, Viktor Gyokeres, recently recovered from a muscle injury, could be given an opportunity. Gabriel Jesus might also make a return, potentially marking his first appearance after 11 months out with injury.

The defensive line also presents challenges, with two key center-backs, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, still unavailable. New signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie are expected to start at the heart of the defense once again.

Arteta attributes his confidence to the club's substantial investment of over 300 million USD during the summer 2025 transfer window. Arsenal brought in 8 new signings across all positions, including goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga; defenders Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie; midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard; and attacking players Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, and Viktor Gyokeres. This strategic recruitment ensures Arteta now has at least two quality options for each position.

"This season's squad is much more reliable", the 43-year-old coach stated on 2/12 during the pre-match press conference for the Brentford game. He emphasized the team's evolution: "We learned from the past; we had to prepare players who can play multiple positions if we want to compete at this level".

Arsenal's squad depth for the 2025-2026 season.

The Spanish manager called upon fans to create an electric atmosphere for the London derby against Brentford, which will be Arsenal's 4th match in 10 days following the international break. "This is an opportunity for the whole team and the fans to collectively raise our energy to the maximum. Tomorrow at 19:30, everyone must be ready like beasts to win", he urged. Regarding the opponent, Arteta acknowledged Brentford's consistent physical and aerial threats. "The intensity of the Premier League is extraordinary. Brentford has many threats, and you have to control them if you want to win", he expressed. He added, "No team in the Premier League doesn't want to score from set pieces. Everyone scores and can also concede from such situations".
