Australia Open runner-up 'undateable' due to success

Female tennis player Danielle Collins, a former Grand Slam finalist, believes her highly successful tennis career is why she has not found a boyfriend.

"If you're a successful man, the number of people flocking to you is limitless. You have so many options," Collins shared on the Nothing Major podcast on 1/12/2024. "But if you're a successful woman, that significantly narrows the dating pool. Sometimes I think men seem intimidated by successful women. I don't know why, but it's true for me and many of my friends."

Early this year, Collins announced her separation from Bryan Kipp, a biotech specialist. The two first met at a coffee shop at Wimbledon. After a short period of dating, Collins and Kipp went their separate ways.

Since then, Collins has remained single. Last month, the 31-year-old tennis player revealed she was looking for a partner through a dating app. As a public figure, Collins's profile quickly attracted attention. She stated she is serious and does not want short-term relationships. However, Collins has yet to find anyone who meets her standards, finding it difficult to date as a professional athlete.

One of the reasons Collins cited is the constant travel. According to Collins, the average person finds it difficult to understand and empathize with the demanding schedules of top tennis players, leading to a lack of patience in a relationship.

"I think to date a professional tennis player, that person must be special, because we travel a lot and life revolves around a tennis career," Collins explained. "Every aspect, from sleep and diet to training and travel, is related to tennis. Therefore, that person must be truly understanding and selfless."

Collins believes a significant sacrifice from the partner is necessary to create and maintain a long-term romantic relationship with a tennis player. Personally, Collins also specified her requirements on the dating app: her new boyfriend must be tall and financially secure.

In early 2024, Collins announced her retirement at the end of the season, stating a desire to start a family and have children. However, 9 months later, the 2022 Australia Open runner-up changed her plans, postponing her retirement due to reproductive health issues.

Collins is known as an outspoken tennis player, unafraid to express her views publicly. She once taunted Australian spectators who repeatedly pressured her during her match against local opponent Destanee Aiava early this year. Collins also accused a cameraman of stalking her and attempting to kiss her after a WTA Tour match.

Collins is one of the most resilient tennis players on the WTA currently, with 10 years of professional play and nearly 500 matches, earning over USD 10 million. The American tennis player is currently ranked 64th in the world. She will begin the new season with the United Cup team tournament in Australia in early 2026.
