Barcelona snaps Atletico's unbeaten streak in La Liga

Barcelona solidified their top position in La Liga after defeating Atletico Madrid 3-1 on matchday 14, 2/12/2024.

Barcelona secured their top position after matchday 14 with a 3-1 victory over Atletico, ending Los Rojiblancos' 13-match unbeaten streak in the league.

The match began with dangerous plays at both ends in the opening five minutes. While Barcelona maintained more possession, Atletico displayed sharper passing. Nearing the midpoint of the first half, Alex Baena scored the opening goal for the visitors with a run from midfield and a composed finish.

Trailing by one goal, Barcelona immediately launched a series of attacks. Despite Atletico's five-man defense initially holding firm, Raphinha found space and beat Jan Oblak to score a stunning equalizer just seven minutes after the opener.

As the hosts' intense pressure continued, Pablo Barrios fouled Dani Olmo inside the penalty area. However, Robert Lewandowski's poorly taken penalty sailed over the Camp Nou stands. Oblak then produced a world-class save from the Polish striker's powerful header, keeping the score level.

Barcelona started the second half with dominance and active high pressing. However, Julian Alvarez had the first opportunity, with his chip shot caught by Joan Garcia. Raphinha and Giuliano Simeone both shot wide from favorable positions, before Lewandowski narrowly missed connecting with Raphinha's cross.

The frantic minutes concluded when Baena suffered a muscle strain and left the field. Shortly after, Olmo broke free from his marker to score with a left-footed shot. He sustained an injury while attempting the shot and was immediately replaced by Ferran Torres.

Buoyed by the goal, Barcelona took complete control, creating numerous opportunities. Atletico also had cause for regret, as Thiago Almada missed an open goal after faking out the entire Barcelona defense.

From Alejandro Balde's cross, Ferran Torres scored in the final minute of injury time, extinguishing any remaining Atletico resistance. This result means Barcelona has lost only one of their last 10 encounters (winning 8, drawing 1). Last season's home defeat was also their only loss in 20 La Liga home matches against Atletico (winning 14, drawing 5).
