On the Polish track on 22/2, Masalela strongly accelerated in the final lap to overtake French opponent Azeddine Habz, then finished first with a time of 3 minutes 32,55 seconds, thereby setting a Botswana national indoor record. This achievement was also the third fastest time in the world in 2026.

However, the 26-year-old athlete's joy lasted only a few minutes. Organizers decided to disqualify Masalela because he performed a celebratory "gun gesture" towards Habz in the final meters.
The referees determined this action violated Rule TR 7.1 on "improper conduct" under World Athletics competition regulations.
Masalela's result was nullified, meaning his new national record was also not recognized. The title and prize money were awarded to Habz, who finished second with a time of 3 minutes 32,56 seconds.
Following the decision, Masalela's coach, Caster Semenya, reportedly filed an unsuccessful appeal. According to Canadian Running Magazine, Habz's team initiated the request for Masalela's disqualification review.

The ruling quickly sparked debate on social media. Former 100m world champion Fred Kerley criticized the referee's decision, stating that such rules diminish the sport's appeal. Meanwhile, former Canadian Olympian Anson Henry also commented, "These rules are killing athletics."
Conversely, some supported the organizers. Renowned athletics commentator Geoff Wightman stated that athletes can enjoy their victory, but should not disrespect opponents.
Masalela is not the first to use a "gun gesture" celebration. At the 2022 US athletics championships, Noah Lyles made a similar gesture after defeating Erriyon Knighton in the men's 200m final without penalty. In 2023, British athlete Charles Hicks also performed a similar action when he overtook Kenyan athlete Victor Kiprop in the 10,000m race and was not disqualified.

According to Canadian Running Magazine, each competition has a different panel of referees. Annually, World Athletics employs over 500 internationally certified referees to officiate events, and the interpretation of rules can vary in situations not specifically described.
