Bouaddi – the 18-year-old midfielder tormenting Brazil's midfield

The Moroccan player who troubled Brazil's stars most was Ayyoub Bouaddi, an 18-year-old midfielder displaying rare confidence at the 2026 World Cup.

In the 87th minute of the match between Morocco and Brazil, Ayyoub Bouaddi received the ball in his own half. Before even touching it, the 18-year-old midfielder calmly clapped to acknowledge a pass from his teammate Youssef Belammari.

This seemingly minor moment accurately reflected Bouaddi's performance in the 1-1 draw during the opening match of the 2026 World Cup. As Morocco faced pressure from Brazil, it was rare to see a teenage player confident enough to praise a teammate while preparing to handle the ball. That match brought Bouaddi into the global spotlight.

FIFA awarded Vinicius Junior, who scored Brazil's equalizer, the man of the match title. However, in the post-match interview area, many journalists flocked to Bouaddi. Some even suggested he was the best player on the field. Central defender Marquinhos also admitted that the World Cup always uncovers new talents, and Bouaddi was a notable discovery.

Bouaddi's impressive performance was not solely due to his age. Young players often shine at the World Cup in attacking positions, where speed or skill can make an immediate difference. The center of the midfield, however, is a different story.

This position demands experience, the ability to read the game, tactical awareness, strength in duels, and leaves no room for error. Yet Bouaddi, at just 18 years old, played like a seasoned midfielder with many years of top-level experience.

Coach Mohamed Ouahbi granted his player freedom to move rather than restricting him to a defensive midfield role. This trust was richly repaid. Bouaddi appeared in almost every key area on the field and had the most touches for Morocco, with 87.

A significant portion of these touches occurred on the right flank, where Achraf Hakimi operates. Morocco concentrated 47% of its attacks down this wing, and Bouaddi consistently moved to create numerical superiority, opening space for the defender who plays for PSG.

His ability to choose positions is Bouaddi's most notable strength. The midfielder, born in 2007, currently studies mathematics, and many believe his academic background helps him develop exceptional spatial awareness. At MetLife Stadium, Bouaddi always knew when to drop back to cover, when to appear to receive the ball, or when to support teammates under pressure.

If he were only good at passing, Bouaddi would not have troubled Brazil so much. Morocco's most dangerous weapon was the Lille midfielder's carries through the lines. Throughout the match, Bouaddi made 53 forward carries, 15 more than Morocco's second-highest, Azzedine Ounahi.

His bursts from midfield repeatedly disrupted Brazil's defensive structure in the first half. Instead of safe lateral or backward passes, Bouaddi frequently received the ball near his own penalty area and then carried it past the opposing midfield on his own.

This contributed to Brazil's midfield, which was already considered disorganized in the first half, falling further into a passive state. Casemiro and his teammates often had to drop deep or shift positions to stop the Moroccan player's sudden accelerations.

Bouaddi's greatest contribution, however, came when Morocco did not have possession. In the very first minute, he pressed Casemiro, signaling to the entire team how to approach the match. Despite being positioned deep, Bouaddi constantly appeared in advanced areas of the pitch to lead the pressing system.

Morocco's pressure made it difficult for Brazil to build play from their own half. The yellow-shirted players were often forced into long passes or rushed clearances.

Bouaddi, 1,86 m tall with curly hair, orchestrated Morocco's midfield.

Bouaddi also did not shy away from combative duties. He won 9 of 15 duels and recovered six balls. Last season at Lille, he was among the top 8% of midfielders with the best second ball recovery rates in Europe's five major leagues. This statistic explains how Morocco could press aggressively while maintaining midfield balance.

After halftime, the game changed. Brazil had more possession and gradually pushed Morocco deeper. The African side had only two touches in the opponent's penalty area in the second half, compared to 11 before the break.

However, when Morocco stopped attacking relentlessly, Bouaddi displayed another quality: composure. Brazil repeatedly tried to press right outside Morocco's penalty area, aiming to force errors. Yet Bouaddi consistently escaped seemingly dangerous situations.

A typical play occurred when Vinicius closed him down inside Morocco's penalty area. With his back to the opponent's goal and under direct pressure from the Real Madrid star, Bouaddi calmly shielded the ball with his shoulder and passed it back to goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

The situation did not end there. Bounou then played a slow, high ball back towards Bouaddi near the penalty area. Vinicius rushed forward again. In a tight space, a single miscue could have cost Morocco dearly. But Bouaddi controlled the ball perfectly, turned to escape the press, and won a free-kick.

That moment reminded many of his performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League when he was 17. Large stages seem to highlight this midfielder's confidence.

Bouaddi's maturity extends off the field. Just months prior, he captained France's U21 team. In 5/2026, the player born in Senlis decided to represent Morocco, his parents' homeland.

After the draw with Brazil, Coach Ouahbi revealed that the Moroccan Football Federation had worked hard to convince Bouaddi. "We are lucky he chose Morocco," said midfielder Neil El Aynaoui.

Despite only four caps for the national team, Bouaddi quickly integrated into the squad. Teammate Ismael Saibari even had to remind everyone that the most prominent player in Morocco's midfield that day was born in 2007.

Praise from the media and interest from major European clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool will surely increase after the match against Brazil. However, Bouaddi does not want to discuss his future. "Currently, I am only focused on the World Cup," he replied when asked about transfer rumors.

This answer perfectly mirrors Bouaddi's calm, mature playing style, unaffected by the surrounding noise.
