Chelsea reaches USD 450 million spending mark this summer

Chelsea completes signing of Argentina international Valentin Barco for USD 46 million from Strasbourg, pushing total summer transfer spending to USD 450 million.

Before Barco, Chelsea had already brought in Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for USD 158 million, Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace (USD 70,5 million), Marco Palestra from Atalanta (USD 66,5 million), Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP (USD 58 million), Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg (USD 30 million), Denner from Corinthians (USD 11,6 million), Danny Welbeck from Brighton (USD 6,9 million), and Dastan Satpaev from Kairat (USD 2,8 million).

Chelsea currently leads European clubs in spending since the transfer window opened. Tottenham ranks second with approximately USD 310 million, having signed Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and secured Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka on free transfers.

On 2/8, Chelsea confirmed the signing of Barco from Strasbourg for a fee of approximately USD 46 million. The Argentina player signed a contract until 2033.

Barco, 22, is an Argentina international and a product of the Boca Juniors academy. Chelsea will be his fourth European club, following Brighton, Sevilla, and Strasbourg.

During the 2025-2026 Ligue 1 season, Barco primarily played in midfield instead of his natural left-back position. In total, he made 58 appearances across all competitions for Strasbourg, scoring three goals, assisting 11 times, and receiving 11 yellow cards, reflecting his energetic and aggressive playing style.

Internationally, Barco has earned 5 caps for Argentina and was called up for the 2026 World Cup. The 22-year-old was involved in a confrontation with Jude Bellingham after Argentina's semifinal victory over England in Atlanta, USA.

Earlier in the summer transfer window, Chelsea sold Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for USD 64 million, leaving Jorrel Hato as the sole left-back. Therefore, Barco is expected to provide new coach Xabi Alonso with additional options, given his versatility across the left flank and midfield.

Since the BlueCo consortium, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, acquired Chelsea in 2022 and bought Strasbourg in 2023, Barco marks the 13th player to transfer between the two clubs. He initially joined Strasbourg on loan from Brighton in the latter half of the 2024-2025 season before the French club activated his USD 11,6 million buy-out clause last summer.
