Former arsenal and liverpool goalkeeper dies in train accident

Former goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died at the age of 48 after his car was struck by a train at a level crossing.

Manninger died in his hometown of Salzburg. Local broadcaster Salzburg ORF reported that the former goalkeeper's car was struck by a train while crossing a level crossing in Pabing, near Nussdorf am Haunsberg, around 8:20 AM local time on 16/4.

Sources indicated that Manninger received initial first aid from rescue workers after his car was dragged for several meters. He was extracted from the vehicle, and medical personnel promptly arrived to continue emergency treatment. Despite these efforts, the former goalkeeper succumbed to his injuries.

Manninger was reportedly traveling alone. Authorities stated they would investigate the level crossing's red light signals to determine if the system was functioning correctly. The train driver and approximately 25 passengers on board were not injured.

"We are shocked to learn of the tragic accident in Nussdorf, where Alexander Manninger lost his life," Austria Salzburg, his first professional club, shared on social media. "Alexander was not only a part of the club family from 1984-1996, but above all, a person who left his mark both on and off the field."

Manninger became the first Austrian goalkeeper to play in the Premier League after joining Arsenal in 1997. He made 39 appearances for the London club, securing a Premier League title and an FA Cup.

After leaving Arsenal, Manninger continued his career with several European clubs, including Torino, Siena, Red Bull Salzburg, Udinese, and Augsburg. The former goalkeeper also won a Serie A title with Juventus before returning to England for his final professional season with Liverpool in 2016.

"We are saddened by the passing of Alexander Manninger, who died in a tragic traffic accident," Red Bull Salzburg stated in their tribute. "Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace, Alexander."

On the international stage, Manninger earned 33 caps for the Austrian national team between 1999 and 2009, including a spot in their Euro 2008 squad.
