During halftime, screens at Philadelphia stadium displayed a warning: "a large thunderstorm is approaching." Spectators were instructed to evacuate their seats and seek shelter as directed by stadium staff.
Following this, both teams were informed of a 15-minute extension to the halftime break, with potential for further delays if extreme weather persisted. They were instructed to remain in their locker rooms until cleared to return to the field.

"I stopped updating the players every 30 seconds", French coach Didier Deschamps told the media. "We are waiting. It is important to have time to warm up to help players regain their form."
Ultimately, the match was delayed for nearly two more hours. France returned to the field leading 3-0, thanks to a brace from Kylian Mbappe and a goal from Ousmane Dembele.
Sports events interrupted by lightning or heavy rain are a common occurrence across the United States. Philadelphia is located near Florida, known as the lightning capital. During the peak season of June and July, there are an average of 20 thunderstorm days each month.

US safety regulations mandate a 30-minute suspension if lightning strikes within 14 km of the venue. If no further lightning is detected during the pause, the match can resume. However, if any activity is detected, the 30-minute timer restarts.
FIFA is not responsible for this process and cannot overrule local procedures.
FIFA also does not regulate a maximum delay time. Postponing a World Cup match can create serious scheduling issues, especially in the final round of the group stage when two matches in each group are played simultaneously.
FIFA had warned about extreme weather prior to the World Cup. Experience was also gained from organizing the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the US.
The match between Chelsea and Benfica was interrupted and extended to 4 hours 38 minutes. Chelsea coach at the time, Enzo Maresca, called it "a joke." A friendly match between England and Costa Rica in early June was also delayed one hour due to heavy rain and the risk of lightning.
