The two teams experienced contrasting fortunes in their opening matches. Norway began their World Cup campaign by crushing Iraq 4-1, largely thanks to two goals from Erling Haaland. This dominant victory propelled Norway to the top of Group I.

This impressive win extended Norway's official match winning streak to 11 games. During this run, they have scored 50 goals while conceding only seven. Their last defeat was a 1-5 loss to Austria in the UEFA Nations League in 10/2024.
A significant historical milestone awaits the Nordic team. In their four previous World Cup appearances, Norway had never secured more than one victory in a single tournament. A win against Senegal would mark a new chapter in the team's history.
In stark contrast, Senegal suffered a 1-3 defeat to France in their opening fixture. The African team has now conceded goals in 12 consecutive World Cup matches, a streak that began after their famous 1-0 upset victory over France at the 2002 World Cup.
Among the 48 teams participating in this year's World Cup, only Saudi Arabia currently holds a longer streak without a clean sheet than Senegal.
