Gyokeres' resurgence linked to ex-girlfriend reunion

Portuguese channel TV Guia reports that since reuniting with his ex-girlfriend, actress Ines Aguiar, forward Viktor Gyokeres has experienced a significant surge in form, scoring consistently for Arsenal.

Gyokeres caused a stir last summer when he broke up with Aguiar just before moving to London to join Arsenal. His stated reason at the time was "not wanting any ties to Portugal," after he decided to leave Sporting Lisbon for a new challenge.

However, the nearly 87 million USD-rated forward faced significant challenges adapting to the environment at Emirates. His lackluster performances in the early part of the season drew criticism and skepticism from experts regarding his impact on Arsenal's overall play.

At times, Gyokeres even appeared isolated, struggling to link up play. The Swedish forward scored only three goals in his first 11 matches for the club, followed by a poor run of form from late November to early 2026, with just one goal in 10 games.

But over the past four months, Gyokeres has experienced a resurgence. The 27-year-old forward appears to have found new vigor. He has become an indispensable link in Mikel Arteta's attacking system, as the "Gunners" strive to conquer a historic Premier League and Champions League double.

Gyokeres has scored 14 goals across all competitions since the start of 2026, more than any other player in the Premier League. Across Europe's top 5 leagues, only three stars have outperformed him: Harry Kane (25 goals), Vinicius Junior (16 goals), and Lamine Yamal (15 goals).

TV Guia highlighted a coincidental detail aligning with Gyokeres' surge in form: his rekindling of his relationship with Aguiar. The Portuguese actress subtly confirmed their reunion by sharing a status update on Instagram on 7/3, the same day Arsenal played lesser-known Mansfield in the FA Cup. Recently, she also appeared in the stands to support Arsenal in their 3-0 victory over Fulham, where Gyokeres shone with a brace.

In total, Gyokeres has scored 6 goals in 12 appearances since Aguiar's Instagram post. Across all competitions this season, the player born in 1998 has netted 21 times. He is the first Arsenal player to score 20 or more goals in his debut season for the club since Alexis Sanchez in the 2014-2015 season, who scored 25 goals. In the Premier League era, the only player to achieve a similar feat before him was legend Thierry Henry in the 1999-2000 season, with 26 goals.

Before Sanchez and Henry, Ian Wright was the last to surpass the 20-goal mark in his debut season (26 goals in the 1991-1992 season). Throughout the history of the North London club, Gyokeres is only the 13th player to achieve this feat. Even a "goal machine" like Robin van Persie only scored 9 goals in his debut 2004-2005 season.

TV Guia also reported that Gyokeres and Aguiar have found common ground again after their time apart. The forward had reportedly wanted to put his romantic life aside to focus entirely on his career last summer, but the flame of love reignited after he settled into life in London.

The talented couple has been together for two years, having started dating when Gyokeres played for Sporting Lisbon. Aguiar, who recently landed a role in a new television series in her home country, is reportedly also looking to buy property in London to be closer to her boyfriend.
