How the FIFA ASEAN Cup is affected by India's friendly match with Brazil

India may not field its strongest squad for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 after finalizing a friendly match with Brazil.

India's participation in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 has been complicated by a conflicting friendly match against Brazil. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced on 30/7 that India would host Brazil at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on 3/10. This date clashes directly with the scheduled final of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, creating a significant dilemma for the Indian national team, especially given the substantial financial investment made to secure Brazil's appearance.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup, featuring two divisions, is scheduled from 24/9 to 3/10. The First Division will take place in Indonesia. India is in Group A of the First Division, alongside the host nation, Singapore, and Malaysia. Group B consists of Vietnam, Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines.

India had confirmed its participation in the FIFA ASEAN Cup, with only 55 days remaining until the tournament's start. They face a penalty of at least 15,000 Swiss francs, approximately 500 million dong, if they withdraw within 30 days of the event. This fine increases to at least 20,000 Swiss francs if withdrawal occurs after the 30-day mark. Should India withdraw once the tournament has begun, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee could impose additional sanctions, such as competition bans and compensation to organizers and opponents, depending on the severity of the infraction.

However, Indian media reports indicate the national team will not withdraw from the tournament. According to the Times of India, "The India national team is committed to participating in the FIFA ASEAN Cup as a non-Southeast Asian guest." The article adds, "However, the team will still field its strongest squad for the friendly match with Brazil." The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is currently discussing the option of fielding two separate squads. Indian news outlet Khel Now reported, "The federation will make a decision after consulting with coach Khalid Jamil on how to balance the two squads."

The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 First Division group stage is scheduled from 24/9 to 1/10. Teams will compete in a single round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the final, slated for 3/10. Consequently, it is not feasible for India to play only the group stage and then return for the friendly with Brazil, especially if they finish first in their group. Even if they do not top the group, India faces uncertainty, as FIFA has left open the possibility of organizing matches to determine 3rd-4th, 5th-6th, and 7th-8th places.

Meanwhile, Brazil's friendly match against India is part of their Asia-Pacific tour. Before this, coach Carlo Ancelotti's squad is scheduled to play two matches against Australia on 25/9 and 29/9.

This marks the first time India will face Brazil, and it represents the largest FIFA ranking disparity in the South Asian team's history. India currently ranks 138th, 133 positions below Brazil. The match will take place in Kolkata, a city revered as India's football "holy ground." This city previously hosted football legend Pele, who played a friendly with New York Cosmos against local club Mohun Bagan in 1977. Kolkata also staged a friendly between Argentina and Venezuela in 2011, where coach Alejandro Sabella notably broke tradition by naming Lionel Messi as captain.

FIFA ASEAN Cup regulations permit each national team to register a provisional squad of 55 players, including a minimum of four goalkeepers. From this provisional list, each team must finalize an official squad of 23 players, with at least three goalkeepers. Any exceptions require FIFA approval. Teams are allowed to replace severely ill or injured players from their provisional list up to 24 hours before their opening match. The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 will take place during the new extended FIFA Days window, implemented from 2026. This new format merges the September and October international breaks into a single three-week period, running from 21/9 to 6/10.

Eleven Southeast Asian national teams, along with three guest teams, are divided into two divisions. The Second Division is hosted in Hong Kong, with Group A comprising the host nation, Myanmar, and Brunei. Group B includes Cambodia, Laos, and Timor Leste. Teams will play a single round-robin, with the top two advancing to the final. The champion of the Second Division may earn promotion to the First Division in the subsequent tournament.
