Miroslav Klose currently holds the record for the most goals in World Cup history, with 16 goals scored in 24 matches for the German national team. The former striker, born in 1978, achieved this milestone at the 2014 World Cup, surpassing Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazario's 15-goal tally.
As the 2026 World Cup in North America approaches, Klose believes his 12-year-old record is vulnerable. He notes that FIFA's expansion of the tournament to include more teams will lead to an increased number of matches, providing greater opportunities for top strikers to score.

"I expect my record to be broken at this World Cup", Klose told the German daily Suddeutsche Zeitung. "The tournament's expansion means more matches and more scoring opportunities. I believe Argentina and France will advance deep into the competition. It's only a matter of time before the record is surpassed".
Lionel Messi is a leading contender to break Klose's record. The Argentina captain has scored 13 goals in World Cup finals, needing just three more to equal the record. Should Argentina replicate their deep run from their 2022 World Cup victory, the Inter Miami Club star has a strong opportunity to surpass the German legend's tally.
Klose openly expressed his admiration for Messi, stating he would be delighted to see the Argentine star claim the new record. "If that happens, I would be very happy if Messi is the one to break the record", Klose added. "I have always been a big fan of his. Messi is a genius".
Beyond his praise for Messi, Klose also expressed respect for Argentina's coach, Lionel Scaloni. The two were former teammates at Lazio. "I have great respect for Argentina's coach", he said. "When we were at Lazio, we played together. Scaloni even gave me a city tour and showed me many places. We are good friends".
Scaloni's leadership is key to Argentina maintaining its contender status. The 48-year-old coach guided the South American team to a World Cup victory in 2022 and now aims to defend the title in North America.
Beyond Messi, Kylian Mbappe is also seen as a significant threat to Klose's record. The French striker has scored 12 goals in just 14 World Cup matches, an efficiency surpassing many past legends. At 27, Mbappe has ample time to further his tally, both in this tournament and in future World Cups.
Nevertheless, Messi remains the focal point, as this could potentially be his final World Cup. Following their 2022 victory in Qatar, the Argentine superstar is once again expected to lead the Albiceleste's title defense.
