Liverpool's Diogo Jota dies 11 days after wedding

The footballer married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso shortly before his death.

Diogo Jota married Cardoso on 22/6. One of Cardoso's recent Instagram posts featured wedding photos captioned, "Yes, forever,".

The post received over 190,000 likes and over 1,000 comments, including heart emojis from Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez and Natalia Becker, wife of goalkeeper Alisson.

In another post, Cardoso shared more photos and wrote, "My dream came true,". Jota commented, "I am the lucky one,".

Jota had been with his partner since 2012 and they had three children. Off the field, the 28-year-old was known for his private nature and passion for video games, even participating in eSports tournaments.

Jota was in a Lamborghini with his brother Andre Silva on the A52 highway on the morning of 3/7, about 110 km west of Valladolid, Spain, when the accident occurred. The car reportedly blew a tire before veering off the road and catching fire. Both Jota and Silva, a player for the Portuguese second-division team Penafiel, died. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Jota played for Pacos Ferreira, Atletico Madrid, FC Porto, and Wolves before joining Liverpool in 2020. The 28-year-old scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Anfield club, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup.
