Malaysia opened the tournament with a 0-4 loss to Vietnam in Group A, marking their second consecutive heavy defeat against Vietnam following the 2026 AFC U17 Asian Cup qualifiers. Despite this, coach Shukor Adan's team advanced by defeating host Indonesia one-0 and Timor Leste two-0, qualifying as the best second-placed team. In the semifinals, Malaysia secured a three-0 victory over Laos, who played with one less player due to an early red card.
Coach Shukor expressed pride that his squad, composed entirely of under-16 players, reached the final. He noted their ability to recover and gain experience, becoming more resilient before facing Vietnam again. "We will approach the final differently. The result will be decided by the players' spirit and will," Shukor stated.

Former Malaysia coach Ong Kim Swee, who is now the Director of Malaysia's National Football Development Program, urged the young players to maintain their momentum. He said: "We entered the tournament with the youngest squad and were in the toughest group. There's just one step left. There's nothing to fear; just go out and give your best."
The confidence among those involved appears to have spread to the Malaysian media. Berita Harian ran a headline stating: "U16 team has a chance to avenge 0-4 loss to Vietnam".
"Young Tigers ready to face Vietnam with a revenge spirit," The Star headlined.
Malaysia also draws confidence from their perfect record in two previous final appearances. In 2013, they drew one-1 with Indonesia before winning three-2 on penalties. In 2019, they were crowned champions after defeating host Thailand two-1.

However, Vietnam is widely recognized for its superior technical quality. The New Straits Times described Vietnam as having the best youth training system in Southeast Asia. Coach Shukor also stated that Vietnam is consistently strong across all age groups, from U17 to U23.
After four matches, Vietnam is the tournament's joint-highest scoring team with 16 goals, alongside Australia, and has conceded the fewest, with only one goal. Therefore, spirit alone may not suffice. "Malaysia must be wary of four players: Chu Ngoc Nguyen Luc, Nguyen Van Duong, Le Sy Bach, and Nguyen Manh Cuong. They have contributed 12 goals for Vietnam," a Berita Harian article noted.
The head-to-head record in the tournament slightly favors Malaysia, with five wins and three losses. Malaysia also holds a perfect record against Vietnam in knockout rounds, winning both semifinal encounters with scores of one-0 (2013) and three-1 (2019).
This marks Vietnam's sixth final appearance in 17 tournaments, having previously secured three victories in 2006, 2010, and 2017. Should coach Cristiano Roland's team defeat Malaysia tonight, Vietnam would surpass Thailand and Australia to become the most successful team in the AFF U16/U17 Championship history.
