The two teams' only previous encounter was in the 1998 World Cup group stage, where Morocco claimed a 3-0 victory. Eighteen years later, they met again in Boston before nearly 65,000 spectators. As the national anthems, "Flower of Scotland" for Scotland and "Cherifian" for Morocco, rang out, players and fans from both sides sang loudly, as if on home soil.
Morocco maintained the same starting lineup from their 1-1 draw against Brazil. Scotland made three changes from their 1-0 win over Haiti, with Nathan Patterson, Kieran Tierney, and Ryan Christie replacing Aaron Hickey, Ben Gannon-Doak, and Lawrence Shankland.

The European representative adopted a 5-defender formation for a tight defense, but this strategy failed in the 71st second. From the right flank, Brahim Diaz passed behind the Scotland defense to Ismael Saibari, who broke the offside trap and entered the penalty area. The 25-year-old forward glanced across for a teammate before unleashing a powerful right-footed volley that Angus Gunn could not react to, despite the ball being close.
This marked the fastest goal of the 2026 World Cup and Morocco's quickest ever in the tournament. Historically, the competition has seen 13 goals scored in the first minute. The fastest goal on record belongs to Hakan Sukur, who scored in the 11th second during Turkey's match against South Korea in the 2002 tournament.
The early advantage gave Morocco more space to play, as Scotland could no longer defend compactly. Eight minutes later, the score was nearly doubled when Azzedine Ounahi delivered a cross, but two teammates missed their stride.
The match then became a high-paced, back-and-forth affair with few clear chances. In the 24th minute, cameras captured Pep Guardiola watching the game from the stands. The presence of the Spanish strategist fueled speculation about a national team coaching role after his departure from Man City. This detail seemed to keep television viewers more alert. On the pitch, the organizers played "Don’t stop believing" as a message to the Scottish supporters.
However, Coach Stephen Clark's squad delivered a lackluster performance. In the 36th minute, Scott McTominay lost possession. Saibari made a good pass into the penalty area, but Bilal El Khannouss's weak shot sent the ball over the bar. It wasn't until the second minute of added time that Scotland had a good opportunity, but John McGinn's volley was inaccurate after a cross from Andy Robertson on the left flank.
The second half began with McGinn falling in the penalty area, appealing for a penalty, but referee Ilgiz Tantashev waved play on. Morocco then had a near miss when Saibari's shot deflected off a player and hit the crossbar, before Angus Gunn saved El Khannouss's header. The match was also interrupted for El Aynaoui to change his jersey after it was torn by Jack Hendry.

The latter half of the second period saw Scotland push harder. The encouragement grew in the 76th minute when continuous applause resonated from all four stands. This was a tribute to Scottish fan Donny Strathie, who had passed away at the age of 76 in a Boston hotel on 14/6. This unfortunate event meant he missed his first opportunity to watch Scotland play live at a World Cup.
In the 82nd minute, McTominay fell in the penalty area, but Uzbek referee Tantashev still saw no foul. The Napoli midfielder looked stunned, while Coach Clark and his staff protested intensely from the sidelines.

The pressure in the final five minutes and six minutes of added time was intense for Morocco, amidst the resounding songs and cheers of the Scottish supporters. The African team had a scare when McTominay's shot deflected off a defender into the side netting. Later, Lyndon Dykes headed wide, before realizing McTominay was in a better position behind him. In the next opportunity, the midfielder, born in 1996, argued with Dykes after trying to turn and shoot inside the penalty area instead of passing.
Morocco should have sealed the match but repeatedly missed counter-attacking opportunities. In the sixth minute of added time, Chadi Riad became frustrated with his teammates after clearing the ball just before Dykes could control it for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Ultimately, Morocco held firm to secure their first victory at the 2026 World Cup.
Coach Mohamed Ouahbi's squad temporarily leads Group C with four points. Meanwhile, Brazil is set to face Haiti at 7:30 h Hanoi time.
