Malaysian striker: 'playing Indonesia is like Brazil meeting Argentina'

Naturalized Malaysian striker Bergson senses intense heat ahead of today's match against Indonesia, in the second round of group A of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 first division.

Malaysia began strongly in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 with a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh. Indonesia also dominated, defeating Singapore 2-0. Tonight's match between the two teams could determine the top spot in group A, securing a place in the final.

This rivalry in Southeast Asia dates back to 1957, spanning 85 matches, with Malaysia winning 34 and Indonesia 33. Brazilian-born striker Bergson, who arrived in Malaysia in 2021, already senses the intense rivalry between the two footballing nations. "This match holds immense significance for the Malaysian people. For us, playing Indonesia is like Brazil meeting Argentina", Bergson stated on FIFA's official website.

After residing in Malaysia for five continuous years, Bergson completed his naturalization. The FIFA ASEAN Cup marks the first tournament where the striker, born in 1991 and boasting 199 goals in 200 matches for Johor Darul Tazim, represents his new national team. He noted that the rivalry between the two teams has been a constant topic among teammates since the first day of training camp. "Everyone informed me this is a major confrontation", Bergson added. "We fear no one and will continue to strive for our objectives".

On the opposing side, Indonesian midfielder Thom Haye acknowledged that participating in historically rich and rivalrous matches is an opportunity players should cherish. Coach John Herdman, meanwhile, recounted receiving insistent messages of "you must win against Malaysia" from people every time he went for breakfast.

Both footballing nations have significantly enhanced their strength by recruiting players from abroad. In their opening match, Indonesia's starting lineup featured 11 mixed-heritage players born outside the country, originating from the Netherlands, the US, Australia, and Thailand. Malaysia has six mixed-heritage players, alongside two naturalized players: Bergson (Brazil) and Manuel Hidalgo (Argentina).

The Malaysian national team is currently rebuilding following a naturalization scandal involving 7 players during the final qualifiers for the Asian Cup 2027. Under coach Tan Cheng Hoe, born in 1968, the team is gradually rebuilding confidence. He acknowledged Indonesia's potent attack and a defense featuring world-class players.

"Indonesia is consistent and dangerous. Our defense requires 100% focus. We cannot afford complacency in either attack or defense", Tan Cheng Hoe stated. "We must confidently press forward to capitalize on every opportunity. This match offers the best motivation".

Midfielder Hidalgo, Stuart Wilkin, and striker Fergus Tierney also consider Indonesia a formidable opponent, but believe Malaysia is equally competitive with a chance to win. Faisal Halim urged his teammates to avoid distractions from potential provocations by the home crowd. "On the field, it's 11 versus 11. Fans can only cheer and motivate. We view the Indonesian people as our own supporters", Halim stated.
