Man Utd drops points again

Man Utd drew 1-1 with Leeds in the seventh round of the Premier League on 18/10, extending their winless run across all competitions to six matches.

Bryan Mbeumo's opening goal was not enough to secure a victory for Man Utd after a turbulent week. Dominic Calvert-Lewin's equalizer early in the second half earned Leeds a point, leaving the visitors stuck in the bottom half of the table. After seven rounds, Michael Carrick's side sits 13th with 7 points, having won one match, drawn four, and lost two. Leeds holds 10 points, placing them seventh.

A concerning issue for Man Utd is their inability to convert advantages into control. At Elland Road, the visitors led at halftime but maintained their lead for only about five minutes after the second half began. As Leeds increased the tempo, Man Utd found themselves on the defensive, unable to use their lead to dictate the match. Statistics highlight this limitation: Man Utd only had 37% possession and 74% passing accuracy, while Leeds achieved 63% and 84% respectively.

Carrick sought a solution after a disappointing run of matches with an unusual tactical choice. He deployed three center-backs, positioning Bruno Fernandes as a withdrawn forward in a 3-4-3 system. The idea was to bolster the defense and leverage the movement of Mbeumo and Amad Diallo. However, Fernandes started far from his usual playmaking zone, and the team lacked a fixed target in the penalty area.

Consequently, Man Utd relied on individual plays. Youri Tielemans was a bright spot, creating two clear opportunities for Mbeumo. The Cameroonian forward missed the first but converted a cross in the 35th minute to open the scoring. This play involved a quick, purposeful combination on the right wing, featuring Tielemans and Diallo.

The match followed Martinez's public apology for criticizing management, specifically Jason Wilcox, after the Champions League defeat to Atletico. Carrick still started the Argentine center-back, signaling his intent to put the controversy behind them and focus on football.

However, after halftime, Man Utd lost Martinez to injury, replaced by Noussair Mazraoui. The defense, having just adjusted personnel, allowed Leeds to capitalize on a corner kick. Tarik Muharemovic won the aerial challenge, and Calvert-Lewin evaded Mbeumo's marking to score.

After the equalizer, Leeds had a basis to continue their pressure. While Daniel Farke kept the same starting lineup for the fifth consecutive match, Carrick was still scrambling to arrange his fit players. This stability allowed the home side to maintain their familiar approach after leveling the score. They moved the ball wide, utilizing the overlapping runs of Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson, then sought Calvert-Lewin in the penalty area.

Leeds did not need an exceptional performance to disrupt Man Utd's rhythm. The visitors lacked sufficient possession to relieve pressure, and Fernandes had little impact on build-up play. The captain's shots and individual efforts from midfielders did not create sustained pressure. Mason Mount's introduction for Carlos Baleba also failed to help Carrick's side find a decisive goal.

Elland Road evokes an uncomfortable memory. In January, Ruben Amorim also drew 1-1 at this venue before publicly demanding the recruitment department "do their job," leading to his dismissal two days later. Carrick has not yet faced a similar outcome, but this return visit highlights Man Utd's ongoing struggles amidst personnel debates and an unstable playing style.

Their only Premier League victory this season remains the match against Ipswich in late August. Carrick secured an additional point from Leeds, but the performance was not enough to quell doubts. The upcoming Champions League away match against Como on 21/10 thus becomes the next test, where Man Utd needs both a positive result and evidence they can control a game.
