The 1-2 defeat ended coach Carrick's "honeymoon" with Man Utd, following a run of six wins and one draw. This loss also meant the "Red Devils" missed a chance to narrow the gap with second-placed Man City, who were unexpectedly held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest in the same round.
The winning goal came in the 90th minute when Matheus Cunha's misplaced pass allowed Newcastle to launch a swift counter-attack from near the penalty area. Kieran Trippier, receiving the ball on the left wing, immediately delivered a long pass to substitute William Osula, who surged forward. The Danish forward confidently dribbled, cutting inside before unleashing a left-footed curling shot that arced past Harry Maguire and found the far corner. Senne Lammens' dive only highlighted Osula's spectacular effort.
Osula's goal was historically significant, making him the first substitute to score a winning goal against Man Utd in Premier League history. The 22-year-old forward also helped Newcastle secure four consecutive home victories against Man Utd – a feat the "Magpies" had not achieved in 95 years.
