The latest signals emerged as players gathered with their national teams, preparing for World Cup 2026. When asked about his future at Man City, Gvardiol stated he was content with life at Etihad but offered no long-term commitment.
The Croatian defender mentioned hearing transfer rumors. The 24-year-old expressed happiness at Man City, noting it provides all necessary conditions for career development. However, Gvardiol left open the possibility of a change after the World Cup, stating that everything would be reviewed post-tournament.

This statement immediately drew attention because Gvardiol is a cornerstone for Man City's future. Joining the club in summer 2023 for approximately 77 million GBP (104 million USD), the Croatian center-back quickly became a key defensive player. He can play both as a center-back and left-back, having played 122 matches and scored 13 goals for the club.
Last season, Gvardiol suffered a broken leg in 1/2026. The injury sidelined him for over four months before his return in the late-season victory against Crystal Palace. Nevertheless, he recovered in time to be included in Croatia's World Cup squad. According to Spanish media, Barca and Bayern Munich are targeting the 24-year-old defender.
Beyond Gvardiol, Rodri also has Man City fans anxious. The Spanish midfielder currently has only one year left on his contract and has not agreed to an extension, despite multiple offers from the club.
When asked about rumors linking him to Real Madrid, Rodri remained non-committal. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner stated he is focused solely on his leadership role with the Spanish national team at World Cup 2026, and will address other matters after the tournament.

This is not the first time Rodri has left open the possibility of a future change. In 3/2026, the 29-year-old midfielder admitted it would be difficult to reject top global clubs. That statement further fueled speculation linking him to Real Madrid.
At Etihad, the management still believes Rodri will stay. Guardiola, before his departure, also expressed hope that his player would remain with the team. However, the lack of a contract extension agreement increases concern, especially with President Florentino Perez's known admiration for the Spanish midfielder.
If Rodri and Gvardiol leave, it would be a significant loss for Man City. One is the midfield's maestro, the other is seen as the future leader of the defense. Both are in their prime and play important roles in the team's rebuilding plans.
Doubts about their future emerge just as Man City prepares for a new era under expected successor coach Enzo Maresca, Guardiola's former assistant. The Italian coach will take over a squad less stable than in recent years.
Long-serving key players like Bernardo Silva and John Stones have also departed. Meanwhile, most of the remaining squad is away on World Cup duty, making it challenging for Maresca to fully integrate with the team during preseason. Hoang An (via MEN)
