Neuer uncertain for 2026 World Cup group stage

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is racing against time, but it is uncertain if he will recover in time to start in the 2026 World Cup group stage.

Neuer last played in the final Bundesliga round against Cologne on 16/5. In the 60th minute, the 40-year-old goalkeeper experienced discomfort in his calf and requested to be substituted. This injury prevented him from playing in the German Cup final a week later and has complicated his preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

According to Marca, Neuer's recovery is slower than anticipated. He will miss the friendly match against Finland on 31/5 and is uncertain to play in the game against the US six days later. If his condition worsens, he might not be able to start in the World Cup group stage.

"There is no basis for him to play against Finland. We will see how things develop next week and update on the prospects for the match against the US," German coach Julian Nagelsmann stated on 27/5.

Neuer has played 124 international matches, helping Germany win the 2014 World Cup, secure a bronze medal at the 2010 World Cup, and reach the semifinals of Euro 2012. He was set to retire from the national team after Euro 2024. However, due to Germany lacking a suitable replacement goalkeeper, Nagelsmann recalled Neuer for the 2026 World Cup.

In the 2025-2026 Champions League, Neuer played 11 matches and made 37 saves. He also excelled in domestic competitions, contributing to Bayern's record of only one loss in 41 matches across the Bundesliga, German Cup, and German Super Cup.

"After many discussions, we decided that Germany's three best goalkeepers must be at the World Cup. That is why we called Manuel. Our plan is for him to start," Nagelsmann said when announcing the 2026 World Cup squad.

However, Neuer's return to the national team has sparked debate. Oliver Baumann, the 35-year-old goalkeeper who helped Germany win 5 of 6 matches in Group A of the European World Cup qualifiers, is unwilling to give up his starting spot. "That is my position. I will go there with confidence," Baumann said.

Germany will play three matches in World Cup 2026 Group L: against Curacao on 14/6, Ivory Coast on 20/6, and Ecuador on 25/6. The tournament features 48 teams divided into 12 groups. The top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams will advance to the round of 16.
