Mayweather - Pacquiao rematch at risk of collapse

Legendary boxers Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are at odds over fight venue and match nature, as it shifts from professional to exhibition.

According to the initial plan, the two boxing legends were scheduled to fight in september in Las Vegas, US, streamed live on Netflix. The event was announced as a licensed professional match, to be held at the multi-billion USD Sphere arena.

But in an interview with Vegas Sports Today, Mayweather unexpectedly stated that the venue was not yet confirmed. The American boxer also asserted that the fight would not be official but merely an exhibition, meaning his undefeated 50-0 professional record would remain unaffected.

Netflix announced the rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

Tensions escalated when Jas Mathur, CEO of Manny Pacquiao Promotions and event producer, publicly criticized Mayweather. On his personal Instagram, he wrote: "Men lie, women lie, but signed binding agreements don't."

Later, on ESPN, Mathur further asserted that Mayweather had breached the contract: "Currently, the fight is still on as planned. There has been no cancellation, and Mayweather signed a contract for a professional bout."

According to Mathur, Mayweather's desire to change the match from a professional fight to an exhibition is one of many breaches. He also stated that both parties had communicated after Mayweather's controversial remarks, but the American boxer's side still wanted to alter the terms, and no agreement has been reached.

Mathur also revealed that Mayweather signed three separate agreements on 24/10, 6/11, and 14/12, receiving payment for all three contracts, as well as an advance for the Pacquiao fight.

Mayweather has a packed schedule in 2026, including a match against Mike Tyson in april and an exhibition bout with Greek kickboxer Mike Zambidis. The planned exhibition with Zambidis in june is also considered a breach of commitment.

The Mayweather - Pacquiao rematch was announced in february as a large-scale boxing and entertainment event, leveraging the technology of the Sphere arena. However, current disagreements put the event at risk of collapse. Mathur stated that Pacquiao would not concede: "If Mayweather does not want to put his record on the line, he should say so directly. Pacquiao is not afraid."
