In the 5th minute, Federico Valverde delivered a precise pass, allowing Mbappe to sprint forward and strike from the edge of the penalty area into the far corner, opening the scoring. In the 26th minute, the French forward completed his brace with a tap-in into an open net, following a cross from Vinicius.
These were Mbappe's 10th and 11th goals in 6 Champions League matches this season. He has equaled the record for group stage goals in a single season, set by Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2015-2016 season, who also scored 11 goals in six matches.
Thanks to the Champions League's new format, Mbappe could surpass Ronaldo's milestone, as Real has one more group stage match against Benfica at Estadio da Luz on 28/1. Subsequently, the French forward could aim for the record of scoring 17 goals in a single Champions League season—a benchmark Ronaldo himself set in the 2012–2013 season.

Mbappe also became the 4th Real player to reach the 10-goal mark in a single Champions League season. Previous players to achieve this feat include: Ronaldo (7 times), Raul, and Karim Benzema (once each).
Before the current season, Mbappe had not reached the 10-goal mark in a single Champions League season. While playing for PSG, his best performance was 8 goals in the 2020-2021 and 2023-2024 seasons. Additionally, Mbappe scored 7 goals in one season for PSG and 6 goals while playing for Monaco. Last season at Real, the French forward scored 7 goals.
Mbappe currently ranks 6th on the all-time Champions League scoring list with 66 goals, trailing only Raul (71), Karim Benzema (90), Robert Lewandowski (106), Lionel Messi (129), and Ronaldo (140). Specifically for Real, Mbappe has scored 18 goals in the Champions League, surpassing club legends such as: Gareth Bale, Luis Figo (16), and Fernando Morientes (17).
Notably, Mbappe needed exactly 20 Champions League matches to score 18 goals for Real—the 2nd best performance in the club's history in the first 20 European matches, only behind Alfredo Di Stefano. Across Europe, only Ruud van Nistelrooy scored more goals than Mbappe in his first 20 Champions League matches for a club, while playing for Man Utd.

In the 2015-2016 season, after setting the record of 11 group stage goals, Ronaldo scored an additional five goals in the knockout rounds. The Portuguese superstar scored a total of 16 goals in 12 matches, significantly contributing to Real's championship victory.
That season also marked a major turning point for Real's coaching staff. The club sacked Rafa Benitez mid-season, making way for Zinedine Zidane—a coach promoted from the Castilla team. This decision ushered in one of the most successful periods in the club's history, with a record of winning three consecutive Champions League titles.
In the current season, the Bernabeu club once again changed coaches mid-season, as Xabi Alonso departed and Alvaro Arbeloa—also promoted from the Castilla team—replaced him. These coincidences have raised expectations for a special journey for Real in Europe's premier club competition.
