Mbappe rivals Messi, Ronaldo

Forward Kylian Mbappe surpassed the 60-goal mark in a calendar year after scoring a brace against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on the evening of 3/12.

Kylian Mbappe has scored a combined 55 goals for Real Madrid and 7 for the French national team since the start of 2025. With three La Liga matches and one Champions League fixture remaining for Real Madrid before the New Year break, he is poised to further extend his goal tally.

In the 21st century, only Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Robert Lewandowski have reached the 60-goal milestone in a calendar year before Mbappe. This achievement also marks the first time a French footballer has reached this mark since Just Fontaine 67 years ago.

Within La Liga, Mbappe is just four goals short of Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 59 goals in a calendar year. His upcoming fixtures against Celta Vigo, Deportivo Alaves, and Sevilla present opportunities to match or surpass this milestone. Following the match against Sevilla on 20/12, Real Madrid and other La Liga clubs will commence their winter break.

The brace against Athletic Bilbao also propelled Mbappe to the forefront of this year's top scorer race, securing 16 goals in 15 matches. This impressive tally is double the goals scored by his closest competitors: Lewandowski, Vedat Muriqui, and Ferran Torres.

Mbappe is the reigning La Liga top scorer, having netted 31 goals last season. His outstanding performance this season has seen Real Madrid closely trail league leaders Barcelona by a single point after 14 rounds.

"Kylian is in superb form", stated coach Xabi Alonso following the match at San Mames, Bilbao. "Today, he once again scored two goals, both exceptional finishes. More importantly, his movement and connection with Vinicius were outstanding".
