"My assessment isn't based on Alcaraz having more Grand Slams or major titles," McEnroe said during a US Open commentary on 3/9. "Titles are important, but they only tell part of the story. What's more exciting about Alcaraz is his talent. He can do anything and try anything. I enjoy watching him for this reason."

At 22, Alcaraz has already secured two Grand Slam titles among his 22 ATP titles, an impressive feat that surpasses Djokovic and Federer at the same age and rivals Nadal. According to McEnroe, Alcaraz's strength lies in his adaptable playing style.
The 66-year-old legend explained: "Many players are content with playing from the baseline for extended periods and then repeatedly sticking to that style. Alcaraz is capable of doing that, but he's not satisfied and always tries new things. He has improved his net game, especially on the fast courts of the US Open."
McEnroe also praised Sinner's consistency with his recent titles. However, in his opinion, Alcaraz remains the top player. "Compared to Sinner or the Big 3, honestly, Alcaraz is the most astonishing 22-year-old player I've seen," McEnroe added. "Alcaraz has the potential to catch up to the Big 3, but what he's really doing is forcing all current opponents to change their game to win. Younger players have no choice but to improve to stand a chance against him."
McEnroe was the world's number one men's tennis player in the early 1980s. He won seven Grand Slam singles titles, nine Grand Slam men's doubles titles, and helped the US team win the Davis Cup five times.
Alcaraz has the opportunity to win his second US Open title, having reached the semifinals. He will face Novak Djokovic, who is aiming for his fifth title in New York. Djokovic currently leads Alcaraz 5-3 in their previous encounters.
"Everyone is hoping for a dream final between Alcaraz and Sinner," Djokovic said before his semifinal match against Alcaraz. "I'll try to spoil everyone's plans, even though those two are playing better tennis than anyone else at this tournament."
