Memphis confirmed the news on 12/5. In an official statement, the team expressed sorrow over Clarke's sudden passing and extended condolences to his family and loved ones. He is the most recent NBA player to die before ending his playing career, following Bryce DeJean-Jones in 2016.
"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke", the team wrote. "He was a wonderful teammate and an even better person. Brandon's contributions to the club and the Memphis community will never be forgotten".

The cause of Clarke's death has not been announced. His representative, Priority Sports, also released a separate statement, describing Clarke as a gentle soul who was always there when friends or family needed help.
Clarke's death shocked the US basketball community, as he had just completed his seventh NBA season and was considered an experienced member of the Grizzlies. Just over one month before his death, the Canadian player was arrested in Arkansas on multiple charges, including improper passing, possession of a controlled substance, trafficking a controlled substance, and fleeing from pursuit.
Clarke was accused of driving at a speed of over 160 km/h while fleeing from law enforcement. During a vehicle inspection, police discovered over 230 grams of kratom, a herbal extract native to Southeast Asia. According to Mayo Clinic, this substance can produce stimulating effects at low doses, but at high doses, it is believed to help relieve pain and anxiety. Although legal in some US states, kratom is classified as a schedule one controlled substance in Arkansas.
When Clarke was arrested on 1/4, Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo declined to comment on the incident. "I am aware of the information, but I have no comment", he stated before a game against the New York Knicks.
Off-court issues emerged during the most challenging period of Clarke's career. After being selected by the Grizzlies in the 21st position in the 2019 NBA Draft, he quickly made an impression with his defensive skills, rebounding ability, and energetic playing style.
Clarke was named to the 2019-2020 NBA All-Rookie team, averaging 12,1 points and 5,9 rebounds per game, his career bests. His consistent performance led him to sign a four-year, 50 million USD contract extension with the Grizzlies in 2022.
However, a series of injuries stalled Clarke's career. He played only 6 games in the 2023-2024 season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon. In the 2025-2026 season, the power forward continued to struggle with calf and knee issues.
On 20/12/2025, Clarke sustained a grade two calf strain in a game against the Washington Wizards. By late 3/2026, the Grizzlies announced he would need more recovery time and would miss the remainder of the season, despite expectations that he could make a full return the following season.
The prolonged injury sidelined Clarke for 46 games at the end of the season. During that time, the Grizzlies also experienced a disappointing season, consistently affected by injuries to many key players.
Born in 1996 in Canada, Clarke played college basketball for the Gonzaga Bulldogs after a stint at San Jose State. He was known for his impressive leaping ability despite not having exceptional height compared to other players at his position in the NBA.
During his seven seasons in the NBA, Clarke only played for the Grizzlies. He was well-liked by many teammates due to his calm demeanor and team-oriented spirit. Following the announcement of his death, numerous players and figures in the US basketball community offered their condolences to Clarke's family on social media.
