Neville: 'Man Utd will repeat vicious cycle if Solskjaer is appointed'

Former captain Gary Neville believes the possibility of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returning to Man Utd as interim manager reflects the vicious cycle the club has experienced for more than a decade.

Following Ruben Amorim's sacking earlier this week, Solskjaer emerged as a candidate for interim manager at Old Trafford, despite the club terminating his contract in 2021.

Speaking on Sky Sports before Man Utd's Premier League match against Burnley in round 21, Gary Neville did not oppose his former teammate's potential return but warned it was a familiar scenario. "Man Utd has been through this cycle for 12 years. They bring back former players, then look for new ones, then return to familiar faces", the former England defender commented, likening the situation to "Groundhog Day" – a film where the main character repeatedly relives the same day.

Neville highlighted Solskjaer's love for the club and his management experience from 2018 to 2021 as positives. He also praised other potential candidates such as Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy. "They all love Man Utd, understand the club, and have a deep connection", the 50-year-old former player stated.

However, the former Man Utd captain stressed that even for an interim role, the pressure on a new coach would be significant. "If results are not good in the next four or five months, they will face immense pressure. This is a difficult job", he warned.

Jamie Redknapp, meanwhile, suggested Man Utd should pursue a long-term option immediately. The former England midfielder believes Andoni Iraola, Bournemouth's current coach, is a deserving candidate. "I admire Iraola. He is among the top coaches in world football today", Redknapp stated. "Man Utd is discussing bringing Solskjaer back temporarily, but I truly do not understand why they are not pursuing Iraola now".

Redknapp noted that Bournemouth faces challenges from injuries and squad changes, but this does not diminish Iraola's value. "He once led the team to second place in the league table. A recent dip in form might have caused him to miss a significant opportunity at Man Utd, but the club needs to look beyond that", Redknapp asserted.

Asked if Bournemouth would consider Solskjaer as a replacement if Iraola left, Redknapp responded: "Absolutely not. No other Premier League club would do that. If Solskjaer is truly good enough, why has he not returned to the Premier League since leaving Besiktas?".

Following his 1-1 debut draw against Burnley in Premier League round 21, interim coach Darren Fletcher will continue to lead Man Utd against Brighton in FA Cup round three at Old Trafford on 11/1. Neville believes Man Utd's most crucial decision will come at the season's end. "They need a world-class coach, someone who has proven their capability", he stressed. "Even if the interim performs well in the coming months, Man Utd must still make a significant decision at the end of the season. This is a vital choice".
