Michael Carrick took over the "hot seat" at Old Trafford in January, following Ruben Amorim's dismissal, on a temporary contract until the end of the season. Since then, Manchester United has flourished, remaining unbeaten in 6 Premier League matches. This run includes 5 victories and one draw, propelling them to fourth place, just three points behind third-placed Aston Villa.
The Red Devils' impressive form features two consecutive victories against title contenders Man City and Arsenal. This strong performance has led many fans to call for Carrick's permanent appointment as head coach.

However, Gary Neville disagrees with this sentiment. On Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, he stated, "Manchester United must look for another coach now because you don't know how the results will turn out. External factors can narrow down options."
Neville cited Thomas Tuchel's contract extension with the England national team as an example, making a potential option unfeasible. He explained that if Carrick guides Manchester United into the top 4 and secures a Champions League spot, public pressure for a permanent appointment would be immense. Nevertheless, Neville believes this does not automatically make it the optimal decision.
"I'm not against appointing him. I like Michael a lot and think he is doing a great job. But Manchester United should aim for the best available coach with the highest caliber and track record", Neville emphasized.
The former England defender noted that Manchester United's two recent coaching choices, Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag, were either young or less experienced and had not brought complete success. He also recalled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, another former club player, who had two years of positive work but ultimately could not lead the team back to its peak.
"Eliminating as much risk as possible is the right approach", Neville added, asserting that his view is not personal. "Anyone who knows me understands this isn't directed at Michael. He is a great person, was a great player, and is now doing well as a coach".
Despite his caution regarding a permanent appointment for Carrick, Neville believes Manchester United is capable of finishing the season in the top 4, perhaps even the top 3. He noted that there was a 5-6 week period when the team had a chance to enter the leading group but failed to capitalize, whereas the current situation is different.
According to Neville, securing Champions League qualification, if it happens, would be a significant step forward. This is especially true compared to the situation a few weeks ago, when the team had just changed coaches and few believed they could defeat Arsenal or Man City.
"I wouldn't say they are the strongest contenders for the top 4, but currently they are in the most favorable position", the 51-year-old former defender concluded.
